Domain Backorder Strategy: How Many Slots Should You Use?

When you place a backorder on a .gr domain at Backorder.gr, you choose how many "slots" to allocate — anywhere from 1 to all 32 available per day. Each slot costs €12* (plus the standard registration cost) and represents a set of attempts to register the domain when it releases. More slots = more attempts = higher chance of winning. But more slots also mean higher cost, and the relationship between slot count and success is not linear. This guide explains how to choose the right number of slots for a given domain.

Recap: The 32-Slot System

Each .gr domain has a maximum of 32 backorder slots that can be allocated across all backorder customers (including all customers of backorder.gr and competing services that interact with the .gr registry). When the domain releases at expiration, all active slots fire registration attempts, and the registry processes them in the order received.

A single customer can hold multiple slots on the same domain — there is no per-customer cap below 32. If you allocate 10 slots, you have 10 attempts versus 22 others.

1 Slot — The Minimum Bet

Cost: €12* + registration (≈€42* total for a .gr).

Best for: low-competition domains, speculative attempts, "would be nice" rather than "must have".

With 1 slot, you are betting against up to 31 other attempts. If a domain is high-demand, your 1-in-32 chance is realistic only if there are very few other backorders. For an obscure or unattractive domain that no one else is watching, a single slot is often enough.

Use 1 slot when:

The domain is unlikely to attract many other backorders (specific niche, unusual name, expired by a defunct project).
You are okay losing the bet — it is a "nice to have", not critical.
Budget is tight.

3–5 Slots — The Sweet Spot

Cost: €36*–€60* + registration (≈€66*–€90* total for a .gr).

Best for: moderately desirable domains where you really want to win.

This range is where most strategic backorder customers operate. Going from 1 to 3 slots roughly triples your probability of winning (other things being equal). 5 slots gives you a meaningful share of the 32-slot pool without overspending.

Use 3–5 slots when:

The domain is moderately desirable — a brandable name, short, or has known traffic.
You expect some competing backorders.
The domain is worth €100*–€200* to you if you win.

10+ Slots — Going Aggressive

Cost: €120*+ + registration (€150*+ total).

Best for: high-value domains you really want.

If you allocate 10 slots out of 32, you have roughly a 1-in-3 chance of winning if the rest of the slots are taken by others. For a domain with serious resale value or strategic importance, this can be a worthwhile bet.

Use 10+ slots when:

The domain is high-value (brandable, short, generic, known traffic).
You are willing to invest €150*+ for a meaningful chance.
Competition is likely.

Maximum 32 Slots — All In

Cost: €384* + registration (~€414* total).

Best for: high-value domains where you must win.

If you allocate all 32 slots, no other customer can backorder a domain for the day. Your registration attempt is guaranteed to be the only one when the domain releases.

This is the "I absolutely need this domain" strategy. It is most often used for:

High-value brandable names where the cost is justified by future use.
Defensive captures (preventing a competitor from getting a name).
Domains where you have strong reason to expect non-renewal.

When NOT to Allocate More Slots

When the current owner is active. If the domain has a working website, recent updates, or active emails, the owner almost certainly will renew. Slot count is irrelevant.
When you have no clear plan to use the domain. Domain "collecting" is rarely worth significant slot spend.
When alternatives exist. If the .com.gr version is available, registering it directly costs €30* versus €100*+ for a multi-slot backorder.

What Happens If You Lose

If none of your slots win — usually because the owner renewed at the last minute — €3* per slot is retained to cover the attempt and the rest is credited to your account toward future orders. So a 10-slot backorder that fails: €30* is retained, €90* is credited to your account. No total loss.
